A Four Year Old Lesson

Pez DispenserThe other day my son Joshua and daughter Aleah were given some classic Pez dispensers with candy. Both were really excited and eagerly waiting for the treat.

My wife spent several minutes teaching them how to properly load the candy in to the dispenser and how to retrieve it from the dispenser. She then let our children try it themselves.

Joshua is two and instead of popping the candy in the dispenser he popped most of them in his mouth while his sister who’s four, put each one in the dispenser. What followed was an interesting lesson that I never thought I’d get from a four year old…

My son pretty much inhaled his candy in five seconds flat and Aleah enjoyed each one out of the dispenser with obvious satisfaction. This tortured Joshua and he wanted more…especially seeing Aleah to continue to enjoy the candy treat.

Don’t sacrifice what you want most, for what you want now.

There’s a lot of things that come our way that distract us from the bigger picture. It could be anything that gives us immediate temporal satisfaction where if we patiently wait we could get something a hundred times better!

My wife says that this has been her guiding light for as long as she can remember and something I am fast adopting in my life as well. It is a great reminder of where to keep our priorities and encourage all to adopt!

Remember, only YOU have the CHOICE to make it a GREAT day!
