How to Develop Good Habits

Good or Bad HabitsFrom his book, The Greatest Salesman in the World, Og Mandino says:

“In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure…the first law I will obey is I will form good habits and become their slave.”

Simply put, if we want to succeed we must develop good habits and become their slave. How does one go about developing good habits?

A habit is an action – something that we do – ALL ACTION BEGINS WITH A THOUGHT. All thought begins with DESIRE. All desire begins in the physical makeup of your subconscious. Control our subconscious, control our habits.

YOU MUST HAVE A DESIRE BACKED BY FAITH

Bluntly put, if you don’t have a DESIRE to change, you won’t. Nobody can make this decision for you. Jim Rohn said, “For things to change, you need to change.” Even if you can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until you believe in a manner that YOU CAN CHANGE.

Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith. -Napoleon Hill

THE PRINCIPLE OF AUTO-SUGGESTION

Mr. Hill, from the book Think and Grow Rich, also said, “Faith is a state of mind which may be induced by auto-suggestion…It is a well known fact that one comes, finally, to BELIEVE whatever one repeats to one’s self, whether the statement be true or false.

“If a man repeats a lie over and over, he will eventually accept the lie as truth. Moreover, he will BELIEVE it to be the truth. Every man is what he is, because of the DOMINATING THOUGHTS which he permits to occupy his mind.

“Thoughts which a man deliberately places in his own mind, and encourages with sympathy, and with which he mixes any one or more of the emotions, constitute the motivating forces, which direct and control his every movement, act, and deed!”

Bad habits can be replaced by holding the desire and belief of good habits in our mind repeated over and over again throughout each day. These thoughts will eventually manifest themselves into action and DOING what the mind has been thinking about.

CALL TO ACTION

  1. Write down the habits you want to change.
  2. Write down the habits you want to develop.
  3. Write down WHAT YOU MUST DO in order to change or develop that habit.
  4. Repeat in your mind and aloud several times a day your desire and/or actions you must take to accomplish your desire.

Keep in mind these two thoughts: If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. Isn’t that the definition of insanity? Also, If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.

Remember, only YOU have the CHOICE to make it a GREAT day!

  1. In the social work world, for change to take place there needs to be a balance of two factors. One, there has to be discomfort. If you are too comfortable, you don’t change. The second is hope. You can be totally uncomfortable with your current situation but if you do not have hope that change is possible or that it will help, you can not change. So a balance between discomfort and hope is fertile ground for making CHANGES.
