Life’s Game of Chutes & Ladders

Chutes & Ladders Board GameSeveral years ago I was playing the board game Chutes and Ladders with a niece of mine. A game I used to play as a child, which was one of my favorites.

I loved trying to roll the dice in hopes I would land on a ladder square that would catapult me ahead of everyone else and hoped and prayed I’d miss the slide square where I’d chute back down and have to do it all again.

I could see that my niece was thinking the same thing and she would get very upset, even on the verge of tears when she had to slide back down and start over. In fact, she didn’t want to play the game anymore.

Yesterday I had an epiphany (with help from my wife) on how the game of Chutes and Ladders is nothing more than the days of our lives. One day we may get a ladder, which we have to climb with effort, to advance us ahead and we make great progress in achieving our goals.

The very next day we may land on a slide and have to start over and climb that ladder again. When you slide down, it goes to the bottom a lot faster than climbing a ladder. Or we may just be going through the motions of life, with no ups or downs, and doing the bare minimum just to get by.

Life has it’s ups and downs. You will never fully
appreciate the ups unless you have some downs.

I’ve often wished that we had an instruction booklet to get through life that included the rules of the game. Knowing the rules would properly set expectations that there’s a possibility that we’ll have to slide back down at the beginning and start over. That way we can set the expectation in our mind to learn and grow from out experiences instead of complaining about it and blaming others or the game itself instead of looking at ourselves in the mirror realizing that in order for things to change, we need to change.

We already know the rules of the game. What goes up, must come down. Life is going to bring us highs and lows and knowing that when they come – not if – but when they come, how are we going to deal with it? We can let it bring us down to the depths of hell or the depths of humility. Will we burn or stand back up? Will you brush the dust off, and roll the dice again and keep moving forward?

I choose progress. I am ready to turn my weaknesses into strengths.
I will never stop trying. I will persist until I succeed!

  1. It’s humbling and a little bit scary to know that no matter what we do the downs will come. But it’s also empowering to know that I can be in charge of my own reactions when those downs come. Afterall, I CAN do hard things.

  2. Now that is a great analogy Evan! I never looked at the game chutes and ladders like that before. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy reading your posts. You have a knack for grabbing the readers attention. Great job!
