The Pursuit of Happiness

When Thomas Jefferson put in the phrase “the pursuit of happiness” into the Declaration of Independence I am confident that it was deliberate. Happiness just doesn’t happen, it needs to be pursued.

Dictionary.com defines pursuit as an effort to secure or attain; a quest. Happiness is definitely a quest to be pursed with many ups and downs.

the pursuit of happinessI just got done watching the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” with Will Smith. The first time I watched it several years ago I thought it was a good movie and didn’t give it much thought. Watching it today had a totally different impact as I saw a man go from being homeless to a multi-millionaire…but it wasn’t easy. I hope that I can say if I were in that same position that I’d have a similar outcome.

One of the reasons the movie impacted me so much was because I saw Chris Gardner develop and implement some of the traits and characteristics I’ve been trying to implement in my own life as I’ve been on my own “quest” in personal development. I’ve never thought of it this way before, but this “quest” is the pursuit of happiness in my own life.

The Pursuit of Happiness

DESIRE. Napoleon Hill says that desire is the starting point of all achievement. Those who would win in any undertaking must be willing to burn their ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of ind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN, essential to success.

Chris Gardner’s burning desire was to finish the internship at the top and be offered the one and only job that would allow him to provide for him and his son and get him off the streets.

FAITH. Faith is the visualization and belief in the attainment of desire. Again, Napoleon Hill says that “faith is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmations or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principles of auto-suggestion.

It doesn’t show it in the movie, but I’m sure in Chris Gardner’s pursuit of happiness the thoughts of being number one, getting the job, etc. were constantly in his mind. He really had no choice, but to think about it. That allowed him to keep perspective and to sacrifice what needed to be sacrificed in order to accomplish his desire.

These two quality, traits, characteristics are essential in anyone’s pursuit of happiness. There needs to be desire and the faith to make that desire a reality. I’ve seen it change me in my personal life and know it can do the same for you!

  1. I failed to mention Chris Gardner’s PERSISTENCE in getting what he wanted… a key characteristic that’s often overlooked. In the words of Og Mandino, “I will persist until I succeed!”
