Time Management Mistakes

“Something will master and something will serve.  Either you run the day or the day runs you; either you run the business or the business runs you.” – Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn, a wise man with many wise words that I have adopted as my own and have made them a part of my life. Will you be the master of your day or will the day serve you? I’ve done a lot of research on effective time management and things that we should do to help in that endeavor, but what about the things we shouldn’t do? What are some mistakes? If we know what to avoid, we can recognize it and either do the opposite or root it out of our lives.

5 Common Time Management Mistakes

Not Keeping a To-Do List

Jim Rohn also said, “Never begin the day until it is finished on paper.” (Can you tell I’m a HUGE fan of Jim Rohn?) Part of planning our day includes keeping a to-do list and what we hope to accomplish during a specific time slot. Not writing it down makes it difficult to remember and makes it easy to set it by the way side, which leads to our next common mistake.

Procrastination

My personal belief is that procrastination is the largest stumbling block we face in personal development and effectively managing our time. When we procrastinate, we put off something to do later when we could do it right then and there. Take upon yourself the motto of Nike and JUST DO IT! We cannot move forward and accomplish our goals if we first don’t take the first step.

Not Setting Goals

We could discuss for hours on goal setting, but creating personal goals, writing them down, and continuing to work toward them is vitally important in time management. It allows us to help us prioritize what tasks and things we should do first to accomplish your goals effectively in the least amount of time.

Not Prioritizing our Time

There are many demands each and every day that wants to take up our time. It makes it difficult to find balance between all of our responsibilities and obligations. We need to prioritize our time and do the things that will result in productivity and putting little check marks by our to-do list. There’s something empowering about that check mark and crossing something off on our list that boosts our motivation to keep moving forward.

Mindset

Nothing good comes from negativity. We need to root out all negativity in your life and surround ourselves with positive people and things, which will help us have the proper mindset to be able to even manage our time wisely. One more time, Jim Rohn said, “Days are expensive. When you spend a day you have one less day to spend. So make sure you spend each one wisely.” Why not spend it being positive? There’s something powerful about this law that, if applied, WILL help you with ALL aspects of your life.

Remember, only YOU have the CHOICE to make it a GREAT day!
