How to Manage and Reduce Stress

how to manage and reduce stressStress i the body’s natural response to what it perceives as a threatening condition, and in and of itself it is not a bad thing. Stress can trigger the release of adrenaline in your system to help you get through difficult or dangerous situations, and studies have show that brief stressful experiences can actually boost your immune system.

However, prolonged periods of stress can take a serious toll on your mental and physical health.

Stress can cause our bodies to react in a number of physical ways, including tightening of muscles and rapid breathing – resulting in rapid blood flow, which spreads the increased oxygen throughout the body – and nausea may set in, and thinking processes become chaotic. Once the stress is alleviated, our body then slips into a weakened state as it recovers from the adrenaline surge.

Although life would be dull without some stress, finding yourself in a constant state of stress can impair the immune system, making it less able to resist viruses, and can lead to a constant sense of exhaustion and loss of energy.

Strategies for Stress Management

Stress management is the way we respond and react to the everyday pressures and demands of life. Developing effective stress management skills is crucial for controlling stress.

  • Balance Work & Recreation: Take time out for yourself and do something you enjoy, letting yourself relax and recharge.
  • Deep Breathing: When done properly, deep breathing will relax the body even as it confronts high levels of stress or panic.
  • Consider the Source: Figuring out what is causing your body to feel stressed is the first step toward resolving the problem.
  • Get Enough Rest & Sleep: Although not everyone has the same requirements for rest and sleep, the majority of us need at least seven to eight hours per night.
  • Learn to Laugh: Research has shown that laughter helps the body relax, enhances the immune system, and increases problem-solving abilities.
  • Moving Your Body: Exercise is an excellent way to dissipate stress. You can develop a formal exercise plan, but a less formal approach will work equally well.
  • Organize & Manage Time Effectively: Trying to do too much in too little time is a stress trap. Since you cannot make more time, managing the time you have is vital.
  • Seek Out Support: Having a network of supportive friends and acquaintances is a vital resource in coping with stress. It is important to remember that you are not alone and that others can understand and empathize.

I hope that these ideas helps you to manage and reduce stress in your life. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when” it comes to your life. The most important is taking care of your body. Jim Rohn said, “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

One of the biggest culprits of stress, is money.
